On oublie trop souvent que les premi\u00e8res structures au-dessus d&rsquo;un plan d&rsquo;eau furent \u00e9rig\u00e9es sur la Rivi\u00e8re-des-Prairies, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/proposmontreal.com\/index.php\/dossier-les-ponts-lachapelle\/\" target=\"_blank\">le pont Lachapelle<\/a> en t\u00eate de liste. Le Grand Tronc entreprendra quelques mois plus tard la construction de ce qui deviendra le premier au-dessus du Saint-Laurent,<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/proposmontreal.com\/index.php\/le-pont-victoria\/\" target=\"_blank\"> le pont Victoria<\/a>. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, le pont tubulaire est un des plus longs au monde et ouvrira \u00e0 la circulation en 1859 au co\u00fbt de 6 000 000 $. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La compagnie de chemin de fer Qu\u00e9bec, Montr\u00e9al, Ottawa et Occidental (QMO&amp; OR) men\u00e9 par le gouvernement de la province de Qu\u00e9bec voit en la pr\u00e9sence du Grand Tronc, financ\u00e9 par Londres, un comp\u00e9titeur d\u00e9loyal. Selon les dirigeants de la QMO&amp; OR, la GTR tire avantage de son lien unique, en chargeant de 10 $ \u00e0 12 $ par train en frais de passages, frais consid\u00e9r\u00e9s exorbitants en 1876.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Charles Legge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019ing\u00e9nieur Charles Legge (1829-1881) a d\u00e9j\u00e0 travaill\u00e9 pour les meilleurs industriels de Montr\u00e9al et Kingston, ayant par exemple \u00e9t\u00e9 un des ing\u00e9nieurs derri\u00e8re le pont Victoria durant la derni\u00e8re partie de sa construction. En 1861, John Young, pr\u00e9sident de la Commission du havre de Montr\u00e9al lui donne le mandat de cr\u00e9er des plans pour agrandir le port et pour la mise en exploitation de l\u2019\u00e9nergie hydraulique des rapides de Lachine. Le projet tombera \u00e0 l\u2019eau suite \u00e0 des probl\u00e8mes financiers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 1869, il s\u2019int\u00e9ressera de nouveau aux chemins de fer et joint en tant que membre fondateur et ing\u00e9nieur en chef la Montreal Northern Colonization Railway qui r\u00e9ussira entre autre, le projet de relier Hochelaga \u00e0 St-J\u00e9r\u00f4me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apr\u00e8s une d\u00e9pression nerveuse personnelle en 1872, sa compagnie fera face elle aussi \u00e0 d\u2019importants probl\u00e8mes financiers et s\u2019effondra finalement durant la crise \u00e9conomique de 1873. Le prince consort d\u00e9c\u00e9dera au jeune \u00e2ge de 42 ans d\u2019un typhus abdominal en 1861. Son toponyme le plus reconnu est sans aucun doute celui du Royal Albert Hall de Londres \u00e9rig\u00e9 en 1871 et sans oublier le nom d&rsquo;un piercing quelconque. Avec un budget estim\u00e9 \u00e0 5 000 000 $ et des proportions gigantesques, il d\u00e9passera de beaucoup toutes les constructions de ce genre d\u00e9j\u00e0 construit dans le monde. Il est \u00e9galement propos\u00e9 que le pont sera sous la responsabilit\u00e9 du gouvernement du dominion du Canada et de la province de Qu\u00e9bec et non la propri\u00e9t\u00e9 de quelconque compagnie. L&rsquo;acc\u00e8s serait libre pour tous, tant et aussi longtemps que le droit de passage est pay\u00e9. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u2019une longueur estim\u00e9e de 4,7 kilom\u00e8tres, on pr\u00e9voit lever de terre d\u00e8s la rue Sherbrooke et sera sur\u00e9lev\u00e9 \u00e0 une hauteur de 90 m\u00e8tres en viaduc jusqu\u2019au fleuve. L\u2019\u00eele Sainte-H\u00e9l\u00e8ne, est un parc de vill\u00e9giature et n\u2019est pas <del>la propri\u00e9t\u00e9 du priv\u00e9<\/del> l&rsquo;espace vert que nous connaissons aujourd\u2019hui, agrandi par l\u2019exposition universelle de 1967. Du centre de l\u2019\u00eele, il reprendra de la hauteur allant jusqu\u2019\u00e0 65 m\u00e8tres pour finalement atteindre la rive sud quelque 21 trav\u00e9es plus tard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La superstructure est con\u00e7ue de fa\u00e7on \u00e0 supporter un train bond\u00e9 roulant, deux tramways avec passagers et des voies pour voitures et pi\u00e9tons et tout \u00e7a, sur deux \u00e9tages. Ce qui aura un impact important sur le co\u00fbt des assurances pour les compagnies et ainsi nuire \u00e0 l\u2019essor commercial de la ville. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ils accuseront \u00e9galement le gouvernement de la province de vouloir g\u00eaner intentionnellement avec ce projet au bon fonctionnement des installations portuaires de l\u2019\u00eele. En octobre 1876, la compagnie de Chemin de fer Qu\u00e9bec, Montr\u00e9al, Ottawa et Occidental retire sa demande de construction \u00e0 la ville de Montr\u00e9al et en 1882, elle sera vendue \u00e0 la toute nouvelle compagnie priv\u00e9e fond\u00e9e entre autres par George Stephen, 1er baron Mount Stephen et pr\u00e9sident de la Canadian Pacific Railway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Si plusieurs diff\u00e9rents projets de liens entre l\u2019\u00eele de Montr\u00e9al et la Rive-Sud sont propos\u00e9s, aucun n\u2019aura \u00e9t\u00e9 si pr\u00eat de voir le jour que le Royal-Albert. On sait peu de choses de sa vie apr\u00e8s ce dernier \u00e9chec. Il quittera Montr\u00e9al 1880 et mourut dans l\u2019obscurit\u00e9 \u00e0 Toronto le 12 avril 1881. \u00c0 la fin des ann\u00e9es 1970, le port de Montr\u00e9al d\u00e9placera la grande majorit\u00e9 de ses installations dans Hochelaga, dans l\u2019est de la ville, n\u2019ayant plus suffisamment d\u2019espace dans les installations du secteur de la rue de la Commune. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peut-\u00eatre que les commissaires de l\u2019\u00e9poque avaient vu juste.
